Traveling

The scientific and technological progress of the 20th century has allowed people to overcome time and distance, to cover in the twinkle of an eye the vast expanse of our planet. The whole world is open now. The limits and frontiers of the previous period have stopped to exist on business or for holiday.

Ways of traveling

It is the fastest way of travel. Many people prefer planes as they are very quick and comfortable though quite expensive. You can cover long distances within several hours…

Though it is slower than traveling by plane, it also has its advantages. You can enjoy nice views of the countryside you pass by and not only the clouds as when you fly on a plane…

Some people like to travel by car because it’s very convenient for those holiday makers who are fond of choosing their own itinerary. There they can go as slowly or as fast as they like. They can stop when and where they want.

Traveling by ship is very romantic. Spending time on deck watching sea-gulls and the beauty of the surrounding landscapes can be most fascinating. Sea voyages are becoming more and more popular.

There are tourists who are fond of hiking. Walking a long way in the mountains or countryside is really exciting. In Britain there are a lot of footpaths for walking holidays from one end of the country to the other.

Why do people travel?

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays traveling. It is very useful to visit different countries and get familiar with different cultures. Now a person travels in order to see modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns, to enjoy picturesque places and to discover new things, or just for a change of scene.

From the history of transport…

In the past people did not travel so much as we do today, they set sail in search of new lands and trade routes. To get from one place to another in England coaches were used in the 18th century. In those times letters were delivered by stage coaches which belonged to rich people. The roads were so bad that stage coaches rode only four miles an hour. In 1784 John Palmer organized fast coaches which, guarded by soldiers, ran along the main roads. Along the road there were five places where the coaches could change horses. The first coach ran between London and Bristol. In 1818 bicycles (the wheels were made of wood) came to England from France and soon became very popular. The modern bicycle was invented later. It plays a very important role in the history of transport. We can call a bicycle the “father” of modern cars.

Goals and benefits

The best way to study geography is to travel: we see and learn a lot of things that we can never see or learn at home, though we may read about them in books, newspapers or see films on TV.

Traveling is indispensable for learning foreign languages. Pupils of different age groups go abroad to learn the chosen language. In all European countries there are a lot of summer schools, which are very useful. The effect is great – pupils can speak English more fluently as they don’t have a language barrier any more. They can establish contacts with people easier.

Travel l ing 9"A"

Why people travel to challenge themselves to party or just to have fun to enjoy new experiences to learn a new language to experience new cultures to see new things to eat new food

Ways of travel l ing By bicycle By airplane By bus Hitch-hike By ship By car Hike By horse

Unusual ways of travel l ling BAMBOO TRAIN, CAMBODIA: Passengers sit on a makeshift bamboo ‘train’ (basically just a bamboo platform) powered by an electric generator engine, perched just inches above the railway tracks and traveling at up to 40km/h.

Unusual ways of travel l ling DOG SLEDS, ALASKA: Imagine drifting across a white canvas of snow as a troop of husky dogs pulls your sledge – it’s like something from a Christmas movie. In reality, dog sledging isn’t quite so graceful, it can be a bumpy ride and will be accompanied by your dogs’ barks, but nonetheless it’s certainly a unique journey. For most Alaskan locals this isn’t a day-to-day way of getting around, but for tourists it’s a special way to travel, and something you can’t do in many other parts of the world. The best time to go sledging in Alaska is January-March, as lack of snow in the summer means you’re likely to be pulled by the dogs on a wheeled sledge.

Unusual ways of travel l ling LONGTAIL BOAT, THAILAND: Longtail boats are an icon of Thailand. Originally they were used in the canals that ran through Bangkok – and although the canals have now been filled and replaced with roads, the boats are still prolific in the country. As the name suggests, they are long and slim – the ideal shape for canal cruising – due to the long rod in the back of the boat which holds up the motor. Locals use these boats like public transport and riding one is an experience you can’t miss on a trip to the country.

Unusual ways of travel l ling JEEPNEY, PHILIPPINES: Known as ‘the undisputed king of the road’ in the Philippines, the Jeepney is a mammoth vehicle. When the American troops pulled out of the Philippines at the end of World War II, surplus jeeps were gifted to the locals and this is how the original jeepneys came to being. The Filipinos stripped them down, added roofs for shade and used them to re-establish public transport in the country. Nowadays, brightly decorated jeepneys are a symbol of Philippine culture and the most popular way of getting around in the country.

Famous travel l ers Christopher Columbus – a Spanish seafarer of the Italian origin, in 1492 opened America for Europeans. He was born in October in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. He died in 1506 in Valladolid, Spain. Fernan Magellan - a Portuguese and Spanish seafarer. He ordered the expedition which was the first known round-the-world journey. He was born (12.12.1951) in a village called Chkalovo in the Azov region.

It must have lots of pockets and also have hidden pockets. Jeans and Cargo Pants Cargo pants have deep pockets that are so handy for tickets, boarding passes, passports, even some easy-to-reach cash. Denim is a rugged fabric that can be dressed up or down. Shoes Shoes must be comfortable and water resistant.

Unusual places to visit Lena Pillars National Park: This park is located in Russia. Lena Pillars is a set of vertical cliffs stretching for miles along the banks of the Lena River in Yakutia. These geological formations have entered into the system of protected areas as a national natural park.

Places to visit for health Healthiest Tropical Getaway: Big Island, Hawaii Hawaii’s Big Island is full of potential adventures, from waterfalls to volcanoes, sandy beaches to thick rainforest. For the health-conscious traveler, Hawaii offers a huge variety of activities that are good for mind and body, including surfing, hiking, climbing, paddle boarding, snorkeling and kayaking. For the less adventurous, several resorts offer innovative fitness programs that incorporate surfing, running, yoga and group exercise.

Useful advice for travel l ers In order to pay less while traveling, here are some useful tips. Accommodation: Couchsurfing. One of the biggest guest networks (exists in the form of on-line service). Brings together more than 6 million people in 246 countries. Couchsurfing International Inc. is a Delaware C corporation based in San Francisco that offers its users hospitality exchange and free social networking services. https://www.couchsurfing.org/ Youth Hostel. Hostels provide budget-oriented, sociable accommodation where guests can rent a bed, usually a bunk bed, in a dormitory and share a bathroom, lounge and sometimes a kitchen. Rooms can be mixed or single-sex, although private rooms may also be available. It’s cheap, but in some cities (like Paris) it can be too expensive. B&B .A bed and breakfast (or B&B) is a small lodging establishment that offers overnight accommodation and breakfast, but usually does not offer other meals. Since the 1980s, the meaning of the term has also extended to include accommodations that are also known as "self-catering" establishments. Typically, bed and breakfasts are private homes with fewer than 10 bedrooms available for commercial use. http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/

A dvice for travel l ers Transport: Hitch-hiking. Hitchhiking (also known as thumbing or hitching) is a means of transportation that is gained by asking people, usually strangers, for a ride in their automobile or other road vehicle. A ride is usually, but not always, free. If the hitchhiker wishes to indicate that they need a ride, they may simply make a physical gesture or display a written sign. In North America and the United Kingdom, the gesture involves extending the hitchhiker's arm toward the road and sticking the thumb of their outstretched hand upward with the hand closed. In other parts of the world, it is more common to use a gesture where the index finger is pointed at the road. It is a nice idea to travel by car with a caravan. You can rent a caravan and travel around the world.
